Sam the Parrot

I had a parrot whose name was Sam. Now Sam wasn't a very smart bird.
(He was odd alright).
In fact, he was so stupid that every time I want to put new food and change the water, he would jump up an down the cage battering himself against the wires and making all sorts of noise like a mad man.
He was so battered that no feather grew on his back. b I thought at one time that he had mange; but a friend said only dogs have mange. Maybe he had dry skin and needed a bath, so I got an empty Windex (glass window cleaner) bottle with the spray nozzle, washed it nicely to remove all trace of chemical. On weekends, I would put the cage in the sun and gentle spray Sam.

As the soft mist glided down on him, he would flap his wings and rub his head under his wings and peck at his arse. After spraying him and left to dry for a couple minutes, He was put back inside the house. A few weeks of this, and there was no visible sign of improvement. Now he realy looked almost like a mangy dog.
Then it hit me like a ton o' bricks. Why not take him out of the cage? After all I had nothing to loose. So,I clipped his wings so he wouldn't fly and opened the door of the cage. The poor bugger didn't have the sense (maybe because of his "bird brain", a term sometimes used to describe a person's inteligence) to go out the door, I had to shoo him. He would try to fly but without success and would fall flat on his gut like a piano thrown out the window of a tenth floor appartment. He ran in a corner or under the furniture to hide. But as soon as the way was clear, he ran like he was being chased by a ghost back to the cage. I don't know, he apparently thought it was safer there.
Then it happened. Feather. At last there was greenery on his back like a virgin lawn. Days passed as Sam's feathers grew. Now he looked like a normal bird. He would occasionally go out of his cage and fly up to 2 feet. I decided to clip his wings again and being a little careless, he bit me, so I changed his name to "Son Of Sam". See Son of Sam.

As time went by, and the doves came on my balcony, Son of Sam would eye them sort of jealously (I think) as the flew away. In the Summer of 2007 I noticed something weird about this bird. He would girate and spin around while pecking at his behind, as if doing some strange voodo dance for several minutes per day. (maybe maybe he was trying to masturbate, I thought). I couldn't figure out what the hell he was doing, until a friend told me to place a mirror in or near the cage. At first, "SOS" eyeballed his reflection not knowing what to do. Could it be a creature of his own kind?. With feathers bristling, he started to peck at the reflection in the mirror, but with the response being only a mimicked response. He, at times even tried to bang (copulate) the reflection, he soon gave up as there was no reciprocity. This continued for a few days with less and less enthusiasm until finally "SOS" gave up. Now he just contends with the fact that he may have to spend his life as a hermit. I am planning to get a female companion for him soon; and who knows, maybe one day Son Of Sam will have a family.
